According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US. In 2018 it’s estimated there will be 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer. The standard screening tool is a mammogram, which is an X-ray image of the breast used by doctors to find breast cancer early. However, mammograms fail to detect cancer in 50% of women with high breast tissue density resulting in late stage diagnosis and mortality.
Signs that you should not ignore:
- lumps or thickening inside the breast or underarm
- swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast
- change in size or shape of breast
- dimpling or puckering of the skin
- nipple discharge that starts suddenly
