The Healing Power of Water
Hydrotherapy – An Ancient Therapy Using Hot and Cold Water That Provides Remarkable Healing Benefits
Hydropathy has roots in the ancient tradition of Finnish sauna bathing – alternating between hot and cold water resulting in thermoregulatory reactions. The clinical science of Constitutional Hydrotherapy was developed in the late 1800’s with a substantial contribution by Dr. O. G. Carroll. The benefits include enhanced immune response, promote detoxification, and restore nervous equilibrium. The process although seemingly simple require attention to timing and repeated practice. The definition is “a series of hot and cold compresses applied to the chest, abdomen and back in conjunction with mild sine wave or other electrical stimulation to the back and abdomen (Boyle W, Lectures In Naturopathic Hydrotherapy, pp. 136).” A cycle of heating, cooling, and relaxation is proven to both energize and rest the body, improving blood circulation and activating the lymphatic system to help detoxification. It also actively promotes the release of endorphins, also known as “well-being hormones.”
Thermoregulation – a Cycle of Hot and Cold
Raising the body’s temperature dilates the blood vessels on the surface of the skin, reduces blood pressure, and increases blood flow to the skin and muscles, thus initiating a state of calmness and introspection.
Cold water following a hot stage causes the skin’s pores to close and promote a change in blood pressure, encouraging the body to flush toxins, and the muscles to release tensions. The cold stage prepares you to relax as your body heats returning you to normal temperature. You realize the benefits of the therapy as your body returns to a normal temperature – you relax and restore as you fall asleep.
